Headed North

July 3, 2013

Stayed at Dixie Cavern in Salem, VA last night.

It’s raining lightly so we offer the kids the option of touring the cavern or heading to the science museum. The kids opted for the Science Museum in Roanoke, VA. I guess if you’ve seen one cave (Howe Caverns on day one) you’ve seen them all… But we must be on our 10th science museum and they are still excited about that… Funny. So we move north towards Roanoke.

We spent a few hours in the museum (since it is free with our ASTC membership I don’t fret about just staying a few hours before moving on).

All of the kids really enjoyed the Butterfly House

Carboy decided he wanted a bumblebee mask so he bought that to take home.

Lego boy decided he liked the butterflies so much he needed a replica lollipop, that he quickly devoured.

We found a cute little restaurant to eat, got some gas with a tiger,IMG_5119

and then got on the road.

We traveled north into West Virginia. We crossed a section that only gave us a few miles in this state.

Then into Maryland. I think we passed near where my cousins lived when I was little and we used to go often to visit them.

Then into Pennsylvania. I called ahead and found a site at the Hershey Park campground for tonight. Unfortunately they don’t have any space for us there tomorrow so we will have to move on after we tour the chocolate factory and go to Hershey Park tomorrow.

At 11:30pm, about 6 miles out from our campground as we traveled on the highway, all of a sudden our headlights went off. Luckily the roadway is well lit in this area and our hazards still worked. We exited and were able to get the lights working, but we no longer have high beams. Oh well, we can survive without those.

We made it. IMG_5137 Time to sleep.

Independence Day and chocolate tomorrow.
