Beautiful morning. We all slept until 10am! For anyone who knows me well they know that is incredibly late for me. Very late for Sister Bear and Carboy too, not so much for Sparky and Legoboy, who like to sleep in any chance they can.
Sunny and 75 by 11am we headed to the pool for a few hours. They had two nice pools; one with overhead sprinklers. I didn’t grab my camera so no pictures. In fact, I didn’t take many pictures at all today…
By 1pm the pool was packed; time for us to go. Oscar liked this place so much he decided to make a run for it. Let’s just say Sparky wasn’t too happy that every time he called him, Oscar scurried farther away and when Sparky got close Oscar danced just outside of reach. When he was finally retrieved it was definitely time to go.
We headed east towards New Jersey and crossed the Hudson River.
The early afternoon sun was hot. They are expecting record high temps in this area today and tomorrow.
To skip the congested travel of the city and hopefully avoid baking in the hot sun in traffic on open highways we opted for a scenic route through a southern section of New York. We drove up a tight winding road near Stony Point and crossed the Hudson River on the Bear Mountain Bridge. This was the longest suspension bridge in the world for 19 months in 1924, when it was completed, before it was surpassed by the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia.
The road beyond the bridge was steep and winding. The kids dozed where they could.
Flyer didn’t care too much for the incline and the outside temperature was nearing triple digits so we pulled into a scenic overlook to let every thing cool down.
If you’re wondering where Carboy is he’s been refusing pics because he has an egg on his head from last night.
We made quick time of these closely nested states and we were soon in Connecticut.
Even with windows open or AC on, the near 100 degrees outside heated up the inside of Flyer quite quickly, so I looked for a movie theater up ahead where we could relax for a few hours, have some laughs, and cool down.
We pulled into the parking lot with just enough time to slip Oscar into a canvas bag to smuggle (I mean bring) him in with us, get five tickets for Monsters University, order some very large buckets of popcorn and a few sweets and take our seats right before the movie started. Perfect.
The movie was pretty funny and Oscar was a champ. He stayed right in his open topped bag at my feet. His only temptation was Carboy’s “butter” fingers (literally) with the popcorn as the pieces kept hitting the floor just feet from where Oscar was laying. What’s a doggy to do? Resisting is a tall expectation, but he handled it like a champ!
It was quite late when we got out of the movie and we decided to forego dinner as we just consumed approximately 5 gallons of popcorn.
We headed out to our campground where we’ll spend the night just north of Waterbury CT.
